Two small four-pointed stars on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist showing two small four-pointed star tattoos. The larger star has a soft blue-grey shaded halo around a sharp cross-shaped centre, and the smaller star is a simple outlined shape placed below and to the left. The ink looks slightly faded and the plain skin and wooden surface fill the rest of the frame.

The fog came off the mere before the evensong bell, thick enough that Nell Harrow could not see the gate posts she had walked past every day of her life. Her mother had sent her for salt cod and a tin of lamp oil, and she had not thought to be back before dark. Now the cart track had gone soft under her boots, and the hedges on either side had become one grey wall.

Her grandmother had taught her an old rhyme by the hearth. Keep the big one over your left shoulder, and when the big one hides, keep the small one, for the small one waits for the lost. Nell had always thought it nonsense, the sort of thing said to children who would not come in from the wood. Still she looked up. The fog had thinned above the oaks, and in the gap burned a star with a sharp centre and a blue halo, and beneath it and to the left, a second, smaller, no more than a pin prick.

She followed the small one. It led her off the track and down a bank of bracken, past a fallen ash and a wet stone with a cross scratched into it, until the ground rose and the smell of woodsmoke and tallow reached her. The lantern in the window of the charcoal burner's hut was already lit. Old Abel Crane stood in the doorway with his hand raised, as though he had been waiting for someone to come out of the trees.

'Your mam said you'd be along,' he said, and took the tin from her before she could offer it. 'The small one always does the work. The big one just gets looked at.' Behind her the fog closed over the oaks and the stars went out, but she knew exactly where they were, and she did not look back.
