Two small red heart tattoos on ankles

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two feet rest on a beige carpet, each with a small heart tattoo near the ankle bone. The hearts are filled with red ink, shaded with darker tones, and outlined in black with thin black curls at the top edges. The compact placement and plain background keep the focus on the matching pair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the Hollin Gate inn for nine days, and Mrs Pargeter had run out of candles before she ran out of complaints. It was my sister Nell who found the sealing wax in the bottom drawer of the old coaching office, a red stick gone soft at one end, and beside it a brass stamp shaped like a heart with two curls of ribbon rising from its top edges.

"We'll make one each," she said, and pressed the stamp into the wax until the impression came away clean. She had the steadier hand, so she did the first. I did the second, pressing harder than I needed to, so that the ribbon curls came out thick and uneven. Mrs Pargeter said it looked like a pair of goats had been at it. Nell laughed so hard she had to sit down on the flagstones.

We spent the week sealing notes for the stranded travellers. A clergyman wanted word sent to his bishop, a widow in a fur hat wanted her carriage kept warm for Thursday, and a boy with frostbitten fingers wanted his mother told he was fine. Each note got a heart, and each heart went onto the paper the same way, one red mark and one curl. Nell said it was so the post-rider would know the letters were ours and not some stranger's, though I think she only liked the matching.

On the last morning the thaw had started dripping from the eaves, and a rider came up the lane with a single letter addressed to the two of us, in a hand neither of us knew. Inside there was no message, only a heart stamped in red wax with its ribbon curls pointing the same way as ours. Nell held it up to the window and said nothing for a long while, and then we went out to shovel the path.
