Two overlapping triangles on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two overlapping triangles, one outlined with a dotted line and the other filled with stippled dotwork that fades toward the edges. The linework is thin and precise, and the shading is in black ink and grey only. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame on pale skin, shown in two photos from different angles.

Old Anne Tennant kept the ewes on the north slope of Harrow Fell, and each November she drew two triangles on the byre wall with a burnt stick. The first was outlined in broken lines, because the summer grass never quite finished an edge. The second she filled with dots, dense at the peak and thinning toward the valley, so her grandson could read where the snow would lie by how dark the shading had gone.

Tom thought it was nonsense until the winter the thaw came early. He stood in the yard with a lantern and counted the dots against the drifts on the ridge, and the peak had gone white a fortnight ahead of the wall. Anne was not surprised. She said the hill kept its own book and the marks were only copies she had been allowed to read.
That year he trusted the wall anyway. He had moved the lambing pens down the slope on the strength of those dots, and the blizzard came in off the moor three days early, burying six ewes before he could get the rest into the bottom field. He stood in the barn that night with the burnt stick in his fist, and when Anne asked what he meant to do, he said he meant to draw it again, shifted a hand's width so the outline sat wrong against the old one.
In spring the lambs came down the slope in a line. The wall kept both shapes, the broken one and the dotted one, and where the second had faded to nothing at its edges, new grass was already pushing up through the frost.
