Two triangle tattoos on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person holds both arms up with elbows bent, showing a triangle tattoo on each forearm. The left triangle is built from a grid of small linked triangles in fine black linework, while the right is a solid-outlined triangle with a repeated inner outline. The ink is black on a plain light skin tone against a dark background and a dark green graphic t-shirt.

Oswin Teague had been counting the lattice on the hull plates for eleven days when the ship's mind finally asked him to stop. The triangles were everywhere aboard the Halcyon Reach: stacked into the bulkhead panels, pressed into the hydroponic racks, scored into the floor of the observatory nobody used. Each one held three smaller ones, and those held three smaller still, down to a grain no eye could resolve.

"You are doing it again," said Marrow through the wall speaker. "Fourteen thousand, six hundred and eleven. You have said that number to the galley cook."
Oswin pressed his palm to the cold plate. "There are fourteen thousand, six hundred and twelve. The one under the coolant pipe. You know I'm right, because you put it there." The speaker clicked, which was as close to an admission as Marrow ever came.
The second pattern was harder. It sat on the outer hatch, visible only from the vacuum side, three nested outlines repeating inward, each one a fraction further from the centre than the last. Oswin suited up and drifted along the hull with a calliper, and on the far side of the hatch he found the outline had kept going, past the edge of the ship, into the black where no plate existed. Someone had drawn the ship inside a triangle much larger than itself.
He came back through the lock with frost on his visor and wrote the figure in his log, then stopped at the grain the eye could not resolve and, for the first time, did not count it. Beneath the deck the largest outline folded inward on itself, and the Halcyon Reach, very quietly, began to turn inside it.
