Typewriter quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a forearm carrying a quotation tattooed in a typewriter-style font, set across several lines of uneven spacing. The letters are crisp, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The plain grey background and soft lighting keep the focus on the text.

The lambing shed smelled of wet straw and iron, and Maud had been reading by a paraffin lamp for three nights when the power went out across the valley. The book was a battered omnibus of ghost stories her brother had left behind when he went to Leeds, its spine split and its pages gone soft as cloth. She had kept it under the feed sacks so the mice wouldn't get it, and now she turned the pages with fingers that smelled of antiseptic and lanolin.

Outside, the snow had buried the gate twice. Her father slept in the chair by the stove with his boots still on, a man who had stopped asking what the radio said. Maud read on. The words came off the page in the flat grey type her brother's old typewriter used to make, each letter pressed hard enough to leave a dent, and she could almost hear the carriage bell at the end of each line. Every sentence was a small gulp of air she could not get enough of.

At four the lamp guttered and she carried it to the door. The sky had cleared, and the frost lay so bright on the fields that she could read the last page by moonlight alone. Behind her the ewe bleated once, sharp and new. Maud closed the book, tucked it inside her coat against her ribs, and went to see whether the lamb had found its feet.
