UFO and desert scene with lettering on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a flying saucer with a dashed tractor beam lifting a small alien figure, set above a line-drawn desert with cacti, Joshua trees, mountains, a crescent moon, stars and a shooting star. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The phrase I WANT TO LEAVE in capital letters runs along the bottom of the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The saucer had been hanging over Dry Creek Road since the Tuesday the power went out, and by the third week the guests at the Saltbush Lodge had stopped pointing at it. Ruth Calloway, who ran the place with a rolling pin and no patience, said it was just one more thing she couldn't afford to fix. Then the beam came down at two in the morning, lifted the little grey fellow off the pool deck as slowly as a lift in a department store, and set him in the gravel by the Joshua trees at dawn with one shoe on the wrong foot.

He came to the front desk every morning after that and asked for a pen. He kept a list in a notebook with a cartoon cactus on the cover. Most of it was complaints about the gravity and the price of petrol, which he seemed to think was a sort of fuel. Then he would tap the counter with one long finger and say, 'I want to leave,' and it took Ruth a week to understand he meant it as a plain statement of fact, not a request for a taxi.
She tried everything she could think of. She told him the beam only took what it wanted, which was true of most things. She gave him a map of the county and a bottle of lemonade. One night she sat up behind the desk with the lights off and watched the beam drop again over the mountains, bright and patient, and close around him as he waved at her through the glass.
In the morning there was a pen on the counter and a receipt folded in half. The writing on it was in neat capitals: TELL THE DESK I LEFT THE PEN. Ruth put the pen in her apron, looked at the saucer's empty patch of sky for a long moment, and went out to find the keys to her own car.
