Right, sit down, and don't lean on the lift gate, it's been sulking since Tuesday. You want to hear about Walter Pim and the brolly. Everybody on the fourteenth floor of Harcourt House knew Walter, because he had the only umbrella in the block that was never folded wrong, and he carried it in every weather, including the summer the tar went soft in the car park and the pigeons sat with their beaks open.

He had a motto that came from his mother, who said it over the ironing board. In omnia paratus. Ready for anything. The nuns at St Clement's chalked it on the blackboard for a year, so Walter took it as a job rather than a joke. Every morning he checked the sky from the walkway, and every morning the sky told him nothing useful, so he took the brolly anyway.

That summer, a girl from flat nine called Priya Dhillon came up the stairwell crying, because her dad had lost his key and a thin, mean rain had started. Walter opened the umbrella over her and said, 'Hold that handle and tell me what you can see.' She looked up at the blue panels and said she could see a sun, a small one, somewhere behind the cloud. He said that was the whole trick. You keep your own sun under the umbrella, and the weather can do what it likes.

She held it all the way down to the bottom step, and when her dad came round the corner with the spare key in his fist, Walter was already gone, leaving the brolly leaning against the bins with the rain falling on the pavement in little dark dots. Priya kept the umbrella for thirty years. Whenever it rains now, she still tells the kids it's only the sun having a rest.
