He had a letter from a firm in Plymouth offering him a berth on a survey ship, and he had been pretending for three days that he hadn't read it.

She took the pencil from behind her ear and drew on the back of a spare gate card. A dot for every boat that passed in a year, she said, and there were thousands of dots. Then a loop where the river doubled back on itself above the weir. Then a spiral where the water turned in the basin and never quite left. At the bottom of the line she drew a small pink flower, the way the lilies opened in the pound every morning before the anglers were up. You're standing on the loop, she said. That's only the middle of it.

He laughed and said she sounded like the vicar. She didn't argue. She walked him down to the pound in the grey light, where the water lilies had split their pink petals open against the reeds, and she said nothing at all until a moorhen came out between them and went back in again. Then Tom picked up the ledger, found the blank line under yesterday's entries, and made a dot in ink, one small mark for a boat that had not yet come through.
