Hello Kitty, cupcake and flowers across a back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers the upper back and shows a Hello Kitty character with a pink bow, surrounded by a cupcake, a swirled lollipop, purple and blue flowers, and red hearts including a cracked heart. The bold black outlines and smooth, saturated fills give the piece a cartoon-like, graphic look. The design fills the frame, with the flowers and sweets arranged around the central character.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Past the last well on the Coyote Flats road, a woman called Marisol Vance kept a tin cart painted with cupcakes, and she sold sugar to lorry drivers who had forgotten their children's birthdays. Her lollipops were swirled red and white like a sunset caught in glass. She kept them in jars along the tailgate, where the heat could not get at them.

One dusk a white cat with a pink bow came trotting out of the scrub and sat on the step as though she had paid for it. Marisol gave her a sugar heart. The cat ate it, licked her paws, and said nothing, which Marisol took as agreement. Every evening after that the cat came back, and every evening a purple flower appeared in the cart's window, pressed flat as if it had come out of a seed packet, though Marisol had never bought seeds.

Then the Ferrier boy came through with his truck loaded with cheap petrol and a face like a broken plate, the look a man carries when his girl has gone to Phoenix and not written. He bought a cupcake and asked whose cat it was. Marisol said the cat belonged to the road. He laughed at that, though it was the only time anyone heard him laugh that year.

The next spring the Ferrier boy drove back up the road with a sack of flour and his girl beside him in the cab. Marisol sold them two cupcakes and a lollipop and would take no money. When they had gone she found a single purple petal on the step, and beside it a sugar heart cracked clean across and set back together with a dab of icing. She did not need to look up the road to know the cat was not coming back.
