Unicorn, shell, lips and mushroom flash designs
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
The image shows four separate flash-style designs, each printed as a sticker on a plain pink background. They include a unicorn head above a ribbon reading WONDERLAND, a scallop shell, a pair of red lips with a blue glitter drip, and a round scene of mushrooms with small planets and a crescent moon. The designs use bold black outlines with flat pastel fills in mint, lilac, pink and blue, with no shading.

Nell had been told the barge was called Wonderland because her grandfather painted the name in a bad week in 1961 and never explained the joke. She scraped the cabin side with a wire brush while the narrowboats queued at Ashby Lock, and the old paint came away in pastel flakes: mint, lilac, a pink like the inside of a shell. Underneath, a ribbon she had forgotten was there, faded to the colour of weak tea.

After three days of rain the towpath grew a ring of toadstools, red caps freckled white, and beside them small pale ones glowing like lamps in the dusk. Dez from the next boat said they were fairy rings. Nell said they were just rings, and then felt foolish when she caught herself counting the spots on the biggest cap. That night she sat on the roof with a tin mug of cocoa. The moon was a thin paring over the reeds, and the water held a few stars that might have been planets, or might have been the lock lamps doubled.
Mr Pell, who kept the lock, came along the towpath at dawn with a bucket of quicklime and asked whether she had found the shell. Every Wonderland, he said, had a scallop nailed inside the cabin door so the cut would give back what it took. Nell had not found one. He shrugged and walked on, and she went down into the cabin and pulled up the floorboard by the stove. Wedged in the dark between the ribs was a fan of ridged shell, its underside still glittering with a blue that had dried into the wood like a drip of ink.
She carried it up to the bow, dipped a brush in the last tin of pink, and painted a single line of lips under the ribbon's torn end. Then, because it seemed the right thing to do, she pressed a pinch of blue glitter onto the wet paint and let it run.
