Cat tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a cat with pale markings and a dark tail, shown with its legs stretched upwards as if reaching or climbing. The linework is fine and the body is built up with soft grey shading to give it a realistic, photographic look. The photo is black and white and the tattoo sits against plain skin, with a white lace garment at the edge of the frame.

Brother Anselm swore the cat had been sent to test our patience, because every morning at Lauds she went up the bell rope hand over paw, legs stretched long as a dancer's, until the bell itself shivered and the whole dormitory woke cursing. We had tried everything. Sacks of barley, a locked tower door, a cord of old sailcloth wound round the rope's foot. She simply climbed the wall beside it.

She was Siamese, the colour of weak tea at her ears and paws and dark as peat at her tail, and she came to us from a carter who left her in the gatehouse with a bowl of milk and no explanation. Abbot Gervase named her Compline, since she arrived at dusk, and then spent a whole winter pretending he had not.
The thing I could never explain to the novices was that she did not climb for the bell. Brother Anselm pulled that rope every day for forty years and never once saw her look at it. She looked up at the high window where the morning light first touched the stones, and she reached for it the way we are all taught to reach for God, with everything she had, knowing the wall would not hold her.
When Anselm died in the spring, nobody rang Lauds that morning. The cat sat at the foot of the rope and watched the sky lighten, then turned and walked back into the kitchen, where the bread was already rising.
