USB symbol on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single USB symbol is tattooed on the forearm, made up of a circle at the top, a vertical line ending in a triangle, and two branches with a circle and a small square. The thin, single-weight linework appears in pale or white ink, with faint redness around the lines, which may indicate the tattoo is fresh or healing. The design is centred on a plain skin background with a wooden surface visible at the edges of the frame.

Nobody at Shaw's Repairs believed Ruth when she said the tin could tell the time. It sat under the counter in Sheffield, a biscuit tin with a cracked lid, and held every cable and adaptor nobody had collected in nineteen years. On Fridays she sorted them by eye. The plugs with a little trident and a square corner went left, the ones with a stubby tail went right, and anything she couldn't place she held under the strip light and turned until something gave.

On a wet Thursday in October a lad of about sixteen came in with a memory stick wrapped in a football sock. He said his nan had handed it to him before she went into the home, and his mum's laptop kept insisting the drive was empty. He set it on the counter as if it might bite. Ruth turned it over in her palm, felt the weight of it, and promised him Monday.

The drive wasn't empty. It held three hundred and forty photographs of marrows, sweet peas and a greenhouse with a split pane, all taken on the same tired camera. Near the bottom of the folder was a single text file. It said, in capitals, FOR WHOEVER FIXES THIS: THE BOY IS ALFIE, HE TAKES HIS TEA WITH NO SUGAR AND HE WILL SAY IT IS FINE WHEN IT ISN'T. Ruth read it twice, then copied every image onto a fresh stick, because some things ought to be kept in more than one place.

On Monday she wrote in the ledger, Returned: Alfie, one stick, sock included. Then she made him a cup of tea, no sugar, and tucked a spare trident adaptor into the jiffy bag. It was for the next time something needed plugging in.
