UV caterpillar tattoos on two forearms

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon-style caterpillar tattoos are shown under ultraviolet light, so the ink glows. The left caterpillar is outlined in red-orange with a smiling face and curled body, and the right one is outlined in pale blue-white with a similar shape. The skin is dark around them, and the linework is bold and simple.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourselves down, the pair of you, and mind the rain dripping off that awning. Those two caterpillars never liked the dark, not at the start, so when the lamplighter of Tallow Lane strung his bare bulbs along the railway arches, they crawled straight up the wet brickwork to get a proper look at the world. The red one was called Mags, after a barmaid she'd once seen laughing at the Crown, and she had opinions about everything, mostly loud ones. The pale one was Ferris, quieter, and he followed her everywhere, close enough that she sometimes trod on his tail.

For a whole summer they got along, after a fashion. Mags would tell the rats which bins were worth raiding, and Ferris would tell her which were rigged with broken glass. Neither of them could see the other once the lamps went out, so they took to painting their own names onto the bricks with spit and soot, so they'd know where they'd been. Every night Mags glowed like a coal someone had forgotten to put out, and Ferris glowed like a moon that had come down to look for its lost bit of sky, and every night they pretended they didn't need the other to find the way home.

Then came the night the power failed all down the arches and the whole lane went black as a boot. Mags stopped dead. She could not see Ferris, and for once she had nothing to say about it. Ferris stopped too, curled up tight, sure he'd been left behind. Then, very faintly, somewhere in the dark, a red glow flickered on his side of the wall, and a pale one answered it.

So if you walk down Tallow Lane tonight, after the lorries have gone and the bulbs are switched off, look low along the bricks. You'll see two small smiling creatures still crawling towards each other, one the colour of a coal, one the colour of milk under a moon, and neither of them the least bit lost.
