The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the road past Harrow Cross was a white ribbon nobody would drive. We had nine guests at the Pale Hart and one pig, which was the problem. Mrs Ferris had brought her sow, Duchess, down the lane in a borrowed trailer the morning before the blizzard, because the farm had flooded and the sow had nowhere else to go. She tied her in the old brewhouse with a bucket of swedes and a look that dared anyone to mention bacon.

Nobody mentioned bacon. Gerald from room four mentioned it once, on the Friday, and Mrs Ferris said nothing at all. She only put a pan of porridge on the stove and fed him the whole pan. After that the guests took turns at the brewhouse door. A retired surveyor drew Duchess on the back of a bill with a carpenter's pencil, her tail curled like a question mark, and asked me to read the word he had written across her middle. I said it looked like vegan. He said it was the only word he could think of that meant she would live.
On the last morning the plough came up the lane at eight, and the surveyor left first, forgetting his gloves on the hook by the door. I found them later beside a shoebox of his drawings. On the sheet on top, the pig was drawn in one unbroken line, the word running through her like a second spine, and beneath it he had written in capitals: 'Keep the gloves. Somebody should be able to find her again.'
