Vertical lettering tattoo on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with curly blonde hair is photographed from behind on a sunlit pavement, wearing a white crop top and a dark skirt printed with Roman numerals and a gold medallion. A black ink tattoo of vertical lettering or script runs down the centre of her upper back, and a smaller tattoo is visible lower down near the waistband. The shading is in black and grey, and the image is framed in a soft, candid street-style composition.

The rain came in sideways over the Saturday market in Hallam Street, and by ten the awnings were sagging like wet sheets. I had my trestle tucked under the arcade, where the gutter dripped through the gap between my type trays and a paper lantern. Thirty years of selling old foundry type, and I still kept the drawers in alphabetical order, even when the water ran down the little brass labels and blurred them.

A young man stopped with his collar up and a folded bus ticket in his fist. He asked whether I could set a word vertically, one letter stacked on the next, the way the old printers ran headlines down a narrow column. It was for a sign, he said, for his sister's new flat. I told him it could be done, but the M would have to come from a case of Caslon I'd sold to a dentist in Leeds, and I'd want to see the word written out first.
He wrote it on the back of the ticket in pencil, pressing hard enough to dent the card. It wasn't a sign word at all. It was the name of a street in Lisbon, and the sister had gone there on a one-way fare the week before. I didn't say so. I pulled the drawers, found the letters, and we set them on the counter in the rain, each piece cold and heavy as a key. He paid in coppers, wrapped the type in tissue himself, and walked off without his ticket. I read the word upside down before he'd gone twenty yards.
