Vertical row of geometric symbols on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical column of black geometric shapes runs down the forearm, including diamonds, squares, dots, a looped mark and two exclamation marks, with a larger outlined diamond and square shape at the base. The linework is solid and even, with no shading or fill beyond the black outlines and marks. The arm fills most of the frame against a blurred indoor background with a lit Christmas tree on the right.

She did not have the book. Her uncle had kept it in a biscuit tin under the counter, with a list of shapes pencilled in the margins by three generations of men who never trusted anything printed. Pearl found it by feel, licked her thumb, and worked down the columns while the stove ticked and the wireless in the back room played carols to nobody. The diamonds were letters, the squares were breaks, and the loop, she was almost sure, meant hold and wait.
The last group took longest. It was a large diamond boxed inside a square, drawn with the care of someone who had had time to think about it, and it stood for no letter in the book at all. She sat with the pencil above it until the carols gave way to the station chime. Then she wrote the only word it could plausibly be, underlined it twice, and tapped back: HOME. TELL HER THE LIGHTS ARE STILL ON.
