The carpenter's wife had already counted the spoons twice when the stranger knocked, so she was in no mood for a man with a crate of wire. He unpacked it on her scrubbed table: seven frames, each one a shape she had no name for. The sphere, he said, was a bubble that had learned to hold still. The one like a spiked star wanted feeding. Her husband, Tobias Wren, came in from the woodshed smelling of pine and asked what the price was.

The price, the stranger said, was a night's lodging and the naming of each shape before dawn. Tobias tried. He called the cube a box, the triangle a tooth, and the twenty-faced one a dice that had grown up. The stranger shook his head and told him to look at the lines, not the names. By the time the candle was a stub the shapes had gone quiet, each outline taking the colour the fire gave it: violet, indigo, a green like moss, then the orange of a cooling ember, and last the red of the rowan berries by the gate.

At first light the stranger was gone and the table was bare, though a fine red line remained on the back of Tobias's hand where he had traced the cube. His wife found the crate under the bed, empty except for a note in square capitals: THE SHAPES ARE NOT PAYMENT. THEY ARE THE LEDGER. Tobias laughed and took his axe to the forest path, where for a week every tree he cut seemed to fall along one of their edges.
