Vintage microphone on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black microphone with a rounded head and a shaded grille sits on the side of a finger, drawn in simple outlines with fine hatching. A silver ring set with clear stones is worn on the same hand, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the skin. The ink is entirely black and grey.

Mind your pockets and mind the step on the Waltzer, it leans like my brother-in-law after a Friday pint. Ladies, gentlemen, and the young man with the toffee on his chin, step up and hear it from the horse's mouth. Come on now, the wheel's only half full and I'm only half hoarse.

This microphone has been bolted to the same pole since the summer of 1958, when a wireless shop in Boston Stump sold it to me for two gold stones and a fortnight's wages. The grille has been patched with cloth from my late wife's wedding dress, and the cable has been wrapped in electrical tape so many times it's grown a skin of its own. Every evening I tell the crowd the same small lie, that the mic can carry a whisper to the Ferris wheel. It can't. It only makes a plain man sound like he means it.
Last Tuesday the rain came in sideways and the cable shorted with a crack like a cap gun. The lights died along the whole field. A small girl in a yellow cagoule tugged my sleeve and asked why I didn't just shout. So I did. I cupped my hands and told the whole field about the ghost train, and the Waltzer stopped turning, and the ring-toss girls came out from under their awnings to listen, and for once nobody talked over me.
When the power came back the girl had gone, but there was a sixpence on the platform beside the microphone, and next to it a little brass button with an anchor on it. I still say the mic wants replacing. I just haven't had the heart to tell it.
