The lamp at Skerrish Point had been out for three nights when the boat came down, and Old Ada Pryce said afterwards that she was not surprised, only tired of climbing the stairs to trim the wick. It hung above the water like a pewter plate with a lit rim, and from either side of it two long grey barrels stretched out on struts. It did not bob. It stayed as level as a tray while the gulls wheeled round it and screamed at nothing.

A man in a silver coat climbed down a rope ladder and asked, the way strangers do, for the road to the nearest harbour. Ada told him there was only the sea. He asked for water, so she gave him a tin cup and the heel of a loaf, and he drank and looked up at the lamp room with such interest that she wondered whether he had come for the light itself. He said their own lamp had gone dark at home a long time ago, and that they had been sailing toward any light they could find ever since.

Ada filled the reservoir with paraffin, climbed the one hundred and twelve steps, and lit the wick with her good matches. The beam swept out over the water, and the round ship lifted slowly, its barrels folding in like a gull tucking up its feet. The man raised his cup to her from the rail before it went.

Each year since, on the same dark night, a faint wheel of light crosses over Skerrish Point, and the keepers still leave the lamp burning for it.
