Violin outline with hexagons on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A violin is drawn in thin black outline running down the forearm, with strings and scroll visible near the top. Overlapping hexagons in black, grey and purple sit across the body of the instrument, with some filled in and others left as outlines. The two photographs show the same piece from slightly different angles against a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler of Skerrow had only one tune, and she played it every evening on the cliff above the hives, because the bees would not settle for anyone else. Her father had carved the fiddle from a sycamore that washed up after the big winter storm, and he had cut its waist so narrow that it hummed like a hive when the wind came off the sea.

One August the bees stopped. Old Mairi Gunn said they had gone across to the mainland to sulk, and that they would come back only if the tune was played on an instrument with six strings, not four. The fiddler had four. So she took her knife to the cellar, where the comb had hardened into amber, and cut it into small pieces with six sides each. She pressed them onto the body of the fiddle while the wax was still soft, so the strings could run through them and the honey would hold.

She played all night. The sea came up the shingle to listen, and the fog lay down on the boats. At first light the bees rose from the heather in a dark column, crossed the water, and settled on the wax one cell at a time, filling each with a sound that was not quite music and sealing the honey over the lines of the instrument.

When the sun was up, the fiddler found the fiddle silent in her lap. The wax had gone dark, and every hexagon held a bee. Mairi Gunn came up the path with a jar and a spoon, said nothing about the four strings, and only remarked that the honey was good this year and that the sea would want its tune back in the spring.
