Tomorrow I am meant to sit at the long table with my hands folded and be looked at. Above me the last number 20 bus rattles past with its windows lit like a lantern, and a boy with a guitar case counts his coins under the arches. Nobody here is asking me what I want. The pigeons are arguing over a dropped crust, and that seems to be as much attention as anyone can spare.

I took the pen from my bag and turned your letter over. Under your last line I wrote my answer in the same small hand, then underlined it twice so the ink bled through to the other side. The post office on the corner opens at seven, but I have no intention of posting anything. I have my good shoes on and a ticket for the first train south to Ancona, which is less a plan than a direction.
