Volcano and forest full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a volcano erupting beneath a billowing cloud with lightning strikes across the sky. Lower on the sleeve, a glowing orange sunset sits behind dark silhouetted pine trees. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft colour blending that moves from deep blues and purples at the top to fiery oranges at the bottom.

Ysolde, the mountain woke on the third night after the rains stopped, and I have been sitting on the roof of the seed store ever since, watching it breathe. The cloud went up black, then brown, then a colour I have no word for, the pink of a cut thumb held to the lamp. Lightning ran through the top of it in long white forks, and every fork lit the valley for a heartbeat so we could see the old pines standing in their rows like people waiting to be called.

You asked in your last letter whether the trees are still worth the trouble. I said yes because the orchard men said yes, but I am writing now to tell you the truth. I went down to the lower terraces at dusk with a lantern and a sack. The sky over the western ridge had gone the orange of a forge, and the pines stood black against it, thin as pencil strokes. Hoyt, who keeps the ledger, had marked every one of them in chalk. Forty-one left. He wanted me to count again.
I counted. Forty-one. Then I counted the cones in my sack, which is the only arithmetic that has ever comforted me, and found a hundred and twelve. I have sealed them in the dry jars under the store floor, each labelled with the tree it came from and the hour I picked it, because when the ash settles and the sky goes clear again, someone will want to know which trees were standing when the mountain spoke.
The ash is falling now, soft as flour on the sill. I will finish this by the lamp and take it down to the post runner at first light. Keep the jar I sent with the blue thread. Do not open it until the ground stops moving under your boots.
