Dear Tom, the Beetle made it across the causeway on Tuesday with the tide already sliding over the low stones, which Dad says is the only way anything reaches Gull Skerry that isn't a gull. Grandad's old car came off the supply boat with its wheels wedged in a crate of paraffin and its paint still ticking in the cold. Nobody on the island has driven a proper road in four years, so Mrs Ferris cried a little when she saw it, and then told us all to stop standing about like cormorants.

The trouble is the lamp. The big lens cracked in March and the replacement is sitting in a crate of its own at the harbour office, because the mainland men lost the paperwork. Dad has been climbing the tower every night with a torch in his teeth, muttering about Ministry men and their forms. On Wednesday he asked me to fetch the car's jack, and I found Grandad's spare fan belt tucked behind the seat with a note in his square capitals: FOR THE DAY IT ISN'T WORKING. I laughed until I had to sit on the step.

So we fixed it, the belt and the battery and a tin of Grandad's terrible green paint for the rusted wing. Tonight the car sits at the top of the slipway with its headlamps pointed out to sea, and the real light goes round above it every ten seconds. Dad says it isn't much use to a ship. I think it is exactly enough for a lighthouse to look at. Tell Mum the Beetle is still the only thing on this rock that goes where it's pointed. Love, Nell.
