Mater from Cars on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Mater, the cartoon tow truck from Pixar's Cars, with large green eyes, a wide open grin showing teeth, and a tow hook at the rear. The design uses bold black outlines with soft shading, and the body is mostly red at the front and blue at the back, with green and yellow accents. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a slightly blurred tattoo studio background.

You get the call at twenty past one: a hatchback nosed into a bollard outside the bus depot on Tanner Street, its bonnet folded like a paper hat. By the time you've backed the flatbed up, the rain has come on properly, and the sodium lamps are smearing themselves across every puddle, so the road ahead looks painted in a hurry. Your two big green eyes wobble nervously over the wet tarmac while the hook at your back swings a little, bored, waiting for work.

The owner is a woman in a dressing gown and yellow wellies, holding an umbrella that has lost most of its ribs. 'Can you do it without dragging me along the kerb?' she asks. 'I've only had the thing a fortnight.'

'Course,' you say, though nobody can hear you over the diesel and the hiss of the hydraulics. You lower the ramp, ease her little car up onto the bed, and clip the chains with the care of someone threading a needle. Halfway up, the bumper gives a sad crunch and drops clean off into the gutter. She gasps. You rev, shuffle, and bring the car home to the kerb outside her flat without a scratch on the bit she cares about.

She fishes a fiver from her dressing gown pocket and folds it through your open window. 'You've a good face,' she says, and goes inside before you can answer. Driving back to the yard, you catch your reflection in the wing mirror: wide grin, daft teeth, as if the whole city had just told you a joke and you were the only one who got it.
