Volkswagen logo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black Volkswagen emblem sits inside a thick black outer ring on the inner forearm, near the elbow. The logo is filled in with flat black ink and the skin around it is untouched, so there is little shading. The photo is taken indoors at close range, with the arm filling the left of the frame and a white t-shirt with red lettering on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tent had more patches than canvas by the third week of the wet, and Ada Harrow stood in the mud counting the ponies twice because the number never came out right. Her father had painted the same round badge on every door he owned: two black chevrons stacked inside a ring, like a pair of folded arms. The ponies were sold in spring. The lion went to a farm outside Canterbury. Only the caravan was left, and the caravan would not roll.

Nobody could say why the axle had seized. Old Teodor, who had driven the rig for forty years, said the ring was the trouble, that a badge with no road to it grows heavy. So Ada took a tin of black paint and a brush and climbed up to the front hub. She painted the ring again, thicker, and filled the two marks solid until they were the colour of the sky before rain. Then she sat on the step and waited for a sign.

The sign came in the form of a boy from the village, who had walked three miles to ask whether the circus still had its ring, because his mother had once sewn a patch for it. Ada told him there was only the ring in the mud. He asked what it was for, and she said it was a door that opened when you were ready to leave.

In the morning the wheel turned at the first push, and the caravan went down the lane with Ada at the reins. Behind them the black ring stayed on the gatepost where the boy had hung his cap, and the grass grew up through it, and nobody came back to fix it.
