Waffles with butter and a Best Dude Ever banner
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A close-up of a tattoo showing two stacked waffles topped with a pat of melting butter, wrapped by a light blue ribbon banner with the words BEST DUDE EVER in black capitals. The waffles are shaded with warm yellows and browns, with bold black outlines and soft highlights that give them a rounded, three-dimensional look. The tattoo fills most of the frame against smooth skin, with a partly visible coloured tattoo at the lower edge.

Dear Brother Anselm,

You asked in your last letter why the iron has been hissing in the scriptorium passage since Lauds, and I am sorry to say the answer is Brother Cuthbert, and a waffle. He found the old iron behind the altar linen press, the one we were told was for the altar wafers, and decided that two of them, pressed thin and brown at the edges, would be a worthy offering for the feast of St Hilda. Abbot Gervase tasted one and asked for a second, then a third, then a pat of the Jersey butter from the dairy, which Cuthbert set on top so that it slid down the squares like a slow yellow river.
Brother Cuthbert has called it the sacrament of the second helping ever since. He has also been practising a ribbon, which he proposes to paint across the top of the wafer tin in blue, with BEST DUDE EVER written on it in black capitals, because he says the Latin would not fit. I have told him the Rule says nothing about dudes. He replied that the Rule says nothing about waffles either, so we are even.
The abbot has not forbidden it. Yesterday he sent for the iron himself and spent a whole vespers hour with his sleeves rolled, muttering about the proper depth of the grid. This morning Brother Porter found a clean tea towel folded on the hotplate with a note in the abbot's careful hand: Less steam, more faith.
At compline last night, Gervase caught Cuthbert's eye across the refectory and gave him one small, deliberate nod. Cuthbert, who has not looked so pleased since the day he was ordained, mouthed something back that I will not repeat in a letter to a man of your years.
Yours in the butter and the Lord, Brother Edwin
