Mrs Halloran came out to watch and told me my capitals looked like they were leaning into a gale. She's not wrong. I keep wanting to lean.

The job is a plain board for the new chapel hall. The vicar wants WALK BY FAITH in the old running hand, not the block capitals the council likes. Dad always said the trick with a loose script is to let the pen do the thinking, so I practised on the back of the bill-book until my wrist stopped shaking. The y was the hardest. I kept lifting the brush too early, and the descender came out like a dropped stitch. Then on Thursday I stopped trying to hold it and let the loop swing down and under, and it looked like a foot feeling for the next step in the dark.

I finished this morning. Dad came down on his stick to see it, slow on the stairs, and stood in the cold street a long time without saying anything. Then he tapped the tail of the flourish with one finger and said, that's the bit people don't see, Edie, it's the bit that gets them across.

I've hung it above the hall door. The paint's still tacky, so I've told the vicar nobody's to touch it till Sunday. Come home when you can. There's a space on the ladder with your name on it. Love, Edie
