Black fine line script reading Walk by faith tattooed on the top of a woman's ankle, with a metallic chain sandal strap across the foot.

Walk by faith script on ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the top of a foot showing the words Walk by faith in flowing black script. The lettering is drawn with thin, even single lines and has no shading, with the words running diagonally from the ankle towards the toes. The skin tone, silver chain sandal and green carpet in the background are the only other colours, so the image reads as black ink on skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dearest Ysolde, the mist came off the Sallow Pass on Tuesday and did not lift for three days, so the carters have stopped crossing and the bridge-warden has taken to his cot with his boots still on. I have been sent up with the king's ledger to count what the frost has taken, which is mostly cabbages and one goat called Prudence, who I am told is still alive on the far side.

The warden, an old man named Osric Penhallow with a voice like a rusted hinge, showed me the old custom at dusk. There is no rail on the causeway, only a row of white stones laid by his grandfather. Walk by faith, he said, and not by sight, which is a thing people say until they need it said. Then he went back to his cot, and I stood at the edge with the ledger under my arm and the river sounding somewhere below.

I did not intend to walk it. But the carter's boy was calling from the far side and the goat's bell was ringing somewhere in the white, and I thought of your face when you read my last letter and told me I always preferred the safe road. So I set my foot on the first stone, then the next, and the mist closed behind me like a door I had not known was open.

I am writing this from the inn at Hale's Ford, dry and ridiculous, with Prudence asleep across my boots. The road, I can report, was exactly where the warden said it would be, though I could not see a yard of it. Keep a candle in the east window. I will be home before the thaw, and I will bring a few of those white stones back with me.
