Walk by faith script on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reading "walk by faith" runs across the top of a foot, with the letters in a flowing, connected handwriting style. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is light and the photo is taken against a grey surface, with a grey sleeve visible at the top edge.

Dear Nell, the night nurse says I am not to write letters after nine, so this one will go out with the milk in the morning. Your mother will tell you I am stubborn. She is right, but stubbornness is only faith with its sleeves rolled up, and I have had plenty of both since the hip went.

You will remember the canal at Hebden the winter you were seven. The fog came down so thick I could not see my own boots, and your father stood at the lock gate telling us the ice was sound because the ducks were still walking on it. We did not believe him. He went out anyway, one slow step after another, and we followed him because there was nothing else to do. Every few yards the ice spoke under him, a long low note like a wet finger on a glass. He said that was the sound of it holding.
I have kept your father's brass lantern on the hook by the back door since the funeral. Last Tuesday I took it down, lit it, and stood in the yard for a long while, looking at the dark where the field used to be. The stick is lighter than I expected. I am not afraid of the edge. I only wanted to hear the ice speak once more.
The lantern is yours now, Nell. Take it when you go up the moor road in the spring. You will not see the drop until you are standing on it, and that is the whole trick of the thing. Keep your feet moving and listen for the note. Love, Grandad Walter.
