Walk by faith script on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bare foot showing a black fine-line script tattoo that reads walk by faith, with the reference 2Cor.5:7 written smaller underneath. The thin, even linework sits along the side of the heel and ankle against a pale, soft background. The image is black and grey, with no colour ink.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways down Tanner Row since six, and I've sold four umbrellas and one pair of gloves nobody wanted, so that's the week's takings. Mr Okafor on the fish stall says it'll ease by Thursday. He said the same about the shed roof, and that's still letting in.

Your postcard came on Saturday, the one with the lighthouse. You wrote that you're walking the coast path every morning now and can't see further than your own boots in the fog. I read that bit three times at the counter. Dad always said you'd go somewhere without maps, and I thought he meant it as a warning.

Here is what I've done with your things. The brass compass is in the tin with the buttons. The blue scarf is wrapped round the bolt of oilcloth so it stays dry. And the card you left on the hook, with the words in your fast handwriting, walk by faith, I've pinned above the till. Pauline asked what it meant. I said it meant you hadn't finished arguing with God yet, and she laughed so hard she dropped a jar of pickled onions.

Write again when you can see the water, love. I'll leave the light on at the back.

Ruth
