Wanderlust script tattoo on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bare foot resting on pale sand, with a leather anklet and a blue cord around the ankle. The word Wanderlust is written across the top of the foot in a flowing, thin-lined script, with a small looped heart beneath it. The ink is dark grey to black, and the soft turquoise sea and sand in the background are blurred, giving the image a warm, muted tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the keeper's wife at Gull Scar walked the tideline to the far rocks, and every spring the sea took her footprints before she reached the next cove. The islanders said the sand kept nothing, so they never asked where she went. Her son Tobin asked anyway, the year he turned eleven, and she gave him a length of blue waxed cord and told him to tie it round the ankle of the first person he met on the strand who was walking the wrong way.

He found a stranger the next morning, a bootless man with salt in his beard who had come off a boat that would not wait for him. The man laughed and said he had been walking since he could stand. Tobin knotted the cord above the man's ankle, and the man, pleased, traced a word in the wet sand with a crooked finger. It was a word Tobin could read but did not understand, though he felt it pulling at him like a tide. Beneath it the man drew a small loop, a heart with its ribbon undone.

When the boy came home without the cord, his mother said nothing. She only lit the lamp early that night and turned it slowly toward the west, where the tide was running out past the far rocks. By morning the sand was smooth and bare as a page.

Tobin went to the far rocks himself the spring he turned twenty, with a leather strap on his wrist and a pocket full of salt. He stood where the tide had thinned to a shine, and he wrote the word in the sand with his heel. The sea came in and took it, as it always did, but the boy kept walking.
