Wanderlust script tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests in beach sand with a brown leather anklet and blue cord around the ankle. The word Wanderlust is written in black, thin-lined cursive across the top of the foot, with a long looping swash extending to the left. The background is a soft-focus blue sea and pale sand, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

Ada Rennick was halfway through a letter to her brother in Valparaíso when the paraffin ran low and the post boat showed its lantern off the point. She wrote the capital W the way her schoolmaster had once called showy, looping it out like a length of rope paid over the side. Her husband Tom came up the iron stairs with the lamp trimmings under one arm and read over her shoulder without asking.

"It's only a word," he said. "Nobody wanders on a rock with a light on it."

"It isn't a place," she said. "It's the pull you feel in the legs when the tide turns and you want to go with it." She blotted the ink with her thumb. "You wouldn't know. You've never once wanted to be anywhere but here."

The equinox gale came in the night and tore a page loose from the sill. By morning it had skated across the yard and lodged in the wet sand below the cliff path, where a boy named Wilf Parr found it with a crab in one corner. He could not read the whole thing, but he could read the swash, and he carried it up the path in both hands as if it might still blow away.

Forty years later a man with salt in his beard climbed those same steps, a tin trunk on his shoulder and a bundle of letters in his coat. He stopped on the landing where the glass caught the sun and found the page folded inside his own mother's Bible. Tom had long since died. Ada was at the window, filling the paraffin tank, and she did not turn round. "You took your time," she said. The lamp went on turning above them both.
