Warr;or script with arrow
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads warr;or in thin, handwritten lettering, with a semicolon in place of the letter i. Below the text, a long black arrow runs across the frame, with three fletching lines at the tail and a solid arrowhead on the right. The linework is clean and uniform, and the image is black and white with no shading.

Dear Mam, we are eleven days out of Hull and the swell has stopped turning my stomach, so you may tell Mr Ashby I am not dead of seasickness after all. I have the composing stick you gave me strapped inside my coat, and I have been setting type in my head since Spurn Head, because it is the only trade I know that stays still while everything else rolls.

Do you remember the handbill for the archery meeting at Hessle? The word was WARRIOR and the i had snapped in the forme, so Mr Ashby had me fish a sort from the spare case. There was no i left in the drawer, only a semicolon, and he swore and said it would have to do. Nobody at the butts seemed to mind. The bowmen read it as a stop, a breath, and then a go on, which Mr Ashby said was more than most handbills manage.
The captain's clerk, a man called Pell with an archer's shoulders, saw me copying the line onto the back of a manifest. He took my pencil and drew a long shaft under the word, three feathers at the tail and a head as sharp as a compositor's rule. He says a line of type wants something to fly along, or it just lies there being read. I have pinned the page above my bunk, and every morning it points the way the ship is heading.
I will not be home before the frost. When I come back I will bring you a sort from every port we touch, and we will set the bill again properly, with the i restored, unless you find you prefer it the way it came out. Tell Mr Ashby the stop was his doing, and that I am not finished yet.
