Warrior lettering with arrow on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word warrior in a lowercase, hand-lettered script, with a semicolon replacing the dot of the i. A thin black arrow with feathered fletching runs diagonally beneath the lettering, pointing up and to the right. The fine, even linework is in solid black ink on light skin, with the design filling the centre of a close-up frame.

Late August, and Marjorie Pell had been gathering windfalls since six, while her brother Tom was still up the ladder in the Bramley row, arguing with a wasp nest he had promised to leave alone. She had the wicker basket on her hip and a sack of cider apples going soft in the grass. 'Come down before you fall and I have to tell Mam,' she called.

Tom came down with a bundle of ash whips under one arm, the straight ones he had cut from the hedge by the stile. He sat on the orchard wall and began to whittle, and she watched the pale shavings drop into the nettles. The council letter was folded in his shirt pocket, creased soft as cloth from being read. 'They want the orchard cleared by October,' he said. 'Says it's a matter of record. I told them it's not finished yet.'
She took the knife from him and showed him the trick her father had taught her: a notch cut true, a feather split with the thumbnail, the nock set square. 'A semicolon,' she said, 'is when you lean on a sentence without stopping it. The thought keeps going. Tell them that.' He fletched the first shaft with three grey feathers from the pigeon she had found in the barn, and when he loosed it at the far trunk it flew low, then lifted, straight up and over the wall.
That evening she pinned the arrow above the back door, point toward the lane where the surveyors' van would come, and Tom wrote one word on the back of the council letter in small, careful lowercase. Then he drew a little mark between the last two letters, a pause that was really a breath, and said nothing was over yet.
