Warrior with semicolon and arrow on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close-up photograph of a wrist showing the word warrior written in a thin black lettering style, with the semicolon in teal ink in place of the letter i. A fine black arrow with feathered fletching runs horizontally beneath the lettering, pointing towards the right edge of the frame. The skin is pale and the background is softly blurred, keeping the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the board's finished and I'm writing with paint still under my nails, so forgive the smudges. Mr Ashby wanted WARRIOR across the top for the bowmen's green at Whitsun, in black letters a foot high, with an arrow beneath pointing to the church gate where the prize hangs. He handed me the brushes and the lamp-black and went off to the Crown.

Then I ran out of black before I reached the i, and the only pot left was the teal we'd used on the lych-gate. Rather than walk to Hallam's for more, I painted the dot as a semicolon, a curved stroke with a stop tucked underneath. I thought Mr Ashby would have words. He came back, studied it a long while, and said a semicolon doesn't close a sentence, it only lets the next part follow on. He said that's what a bowman does, lets the last shot go and keeps on drawing.

Old Tom Greaves shot the final end this morning, eighty-one and his hands like roots. He has walked past the board twice already today, touching the arrow with one finger as if to check it was still wet. The sentence goes on, Nell. I hope that's the right way to read it.
