WARRIOR lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the single word WARRIOR in capital letters across the inner wrist. The letters are set in a clean, even sans serif with solid black ink, and the I has an unusual dot-like mark beneath it. The composition is a close, straight-on crop of skin against a plain light background, with the lettering sitting across the centre of the frame.

The order came in on a Tuesday, eleven stencils for the bus depot signage, and Ruth Caddick swore at the first one before she had cut a single line. Brass was dear and her knife was blunt, so she worked the old way, a steel blade on acetate taped to the bench under a lamp that buzzed. Any letter with an enclosed hollow, like the O or the R, would drop out of the sheet unless she left a small bridge of film to hold it. Every stencil was a bargain between the shape she wanted and the material that refused to let it go.

The word was WARRIOR, the last of the set, and it was the I that gave her trouble. A plain I is a single bar, and cut free it would fall straight through. She tried a bridge across the top and it looked like a flag on a pole. Then she stopped staring at the letter and looked at the floor, where a crumb of film the size of a lentil had dropped from the O. She set it under the I and taped it in place. A dot was all the I needed to stay where it was.
The depot paid on the Friday. Nobody asked about the dot and she did not offer to explain it. The paint went chalky over the years and the gate got rehung twice, but the word stayed legible, and a lad from the works once told her the I was the only letter in the row that looked like it had been thought about.
Ruth never corrected him. Every sign she cut had a hidden bridge somewhere, and the trick was never to let anyone see it.
