Small black symbol tattoo on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A clenched fist is raised against a black background, with the wrist and lower forearm in view. A small, solid black abstract tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with a curved stroke that tapers to a point and a rounded dark section. The lighting is high contrast and the composition is centred on the hand and tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate at Albion Dock had been chalked with the same mark every morning for a week, and every morning the foreman scrubbed it off with turpentine and a rag that smelled of his supper. Nobody admitted to drawing it. It was a small thing, a stroke like a seed pod with its tail flicked up, and the men who saw it knew what it meant before they knew who had put it there.

Mab Tennant ran the soup kitchen on Cleaver Street and she kept the ledger. Forty-one families that week, each one in her careful hand with the number of loaves beside it. When the owners' man came asking for names she handed him the book with the names crossed out and the figures left in, and he went away thinking the Tennant woman had gone soft in the head.

On the Thursday the strike committee met in the back room of the Crown and voted to hold the gate. Fists went up around the table, not in anger, only to show the count. Old Pell, who had lost two fingers to a winch, kept his hand low and laughed at himself for it. Mab watched someone cut the same stroke into the wet sawdust under the window and thought how easily a mark could be rubbed out, and how much harder it was to make a room forget it.

The gate held for nineteen days. On the twentieth the mark was still there when the men came in, chalked fresh on the brick, and nobody had scrubbed it. Mab closed the ledger, wrote the last figure, and drew the stroke beside it, tail up, the way you sign a thing you intend to keep.
