Warrior lettering on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the word WARR;OR tattooed in thin, evenly spaced capital letters, with a semicolon replacing the letter I. The linework is fine and solid black with no shading, set in a single horizontal line across the skin. The skin tone and pink sleeve are the only other colours, and the tattoo sits near the middle of the frame.

Nobody in Hobb's Fold had danced past midnight since the spring the miller's boy drowned, so when Nell Varley stood up in the hall with her shoes already laced for the road, the fiddler lowered his bow and waited. She said she was going to the far side of the water to fetch her father's coat, and she would be back before the next tune. Her mother said the river was up. Nell said the river had been up for forty years and nobody had ever stopped it.

The sign over the door had been painted by the schoolmaster, who could not spell and did not care to be corrected. It read WARRIOR, though the I had come loose from the board in a storm and been put back upside down, so it hung there like a small hook with a dot above it. The old women said it was a warning. The children said it was a pause, the kind you take in a sentence before you decide whether to finish it.
Nell crossed the ford at the lowest light, carrying a lantern and a cold potato in her pocket. On the far bank she found the coat, and beneath it the tin where her father kept the names of everyone he had ever taught to swim. Hers was the last one, written in pencil and not yet crossed out. She stood a long while holding the lantern up to it.
When she came back the hall was still lit and the fiddle had started again, slow. She did not run to the floor. She stood at the door, looked up at the sign's dot, and said nothing, and the music stopped on its own. Then she went in and danced until the sun came up, because some sentences are not finished until morning.
