Warrior word and arrow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo reading the word warrior in a typewriter-style serif font, with a thin black arrow running beneath it pointing to the right. The linework is crisp and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a grey textured background, with the text filling the upper part of the frame.

The typewriter on the landing has only one working e, so the guests have learned to write around it. You are the one who has typed all summer, copying the house rules onto cards for Mrs Pargeter's boarding house: no baths after ten, no sand on the stairs, breakfast cleared by nine. Her nephew Alfie calls the cards a joke. The wind comes under the front door every morning and lifts them off the hall table, and every morning you pick them up again.

On the last Thursday of August a lodger named Mr Colquhoun asks you for something to cheer up the foyer before the autumn gales. You type the first word that comes to mind without thinking: warrior. The letters come out in the old serif, a little heavy on the r. Beneath it you draw an arrow in biro, pointing right, towards the window, the pier and the lighthouse that the gulls never seem to leave. Mr Colquhoun reads it twice and says it is a peculiar word for a seaside house.

On Friday night the power goes. The hall fills with candles, damp children and the smell of wet wool, and Mrs Pargeter stands on the bottom stair with the card in her hand. She holds it up to the flame. The ink has run a little in the rain that came through the letterbox, but the arrow is still clear.

"Well," she says, "at least it knows where it's going." She pins it back on the board, pointing up the stairs, towards the room where the children are sleeping, and you take the candle from the table and go up ahead of her.
