Boba Fett helmet and BB-8 droid on calves
Other · Colour · Photo
Two colour tattoos sit side by side on lower legs. The left shows a Boba Fett helmet in purple and green, and the right shows the BB-8 droid in orange, red and teal. Both use soft, loose washes and splashes of paint-like colour around the main subjects rather than hard outlines.

Mags Okonedo had been hired to paint the side wall of the Lantern Yard bakery, and by noon she had already knocked three pots of violet onto the cobbles. Her nephew Tobi, seven and fond of anything round, kept craning off the bottom rung of the scaffold to see what she was making. "That's an egg that's cross," he said, pointing at the sketch. "And that's a bucket with a helmet."

The commission came from Esther Vale, who ran the cloth shop across the square. She wanted two pictures on her shop front: her late husband's dented helmet from the autumn fair, the colour of moss and plums, and the little copper dome that had rolled off the cart the same week and never been caught. Mags had seen neither. Esther described them only by colour. "Green like a bruise going off. Purple like the inside of a plum. Rust at the edges, and teal, as if the sea had got into the paint."
So Mags worked wet, letting the colours run into each other and leaving the edges to bleed like spilt tea. Each night the rain came and washed the splashes down the wall in thin rivers, and each dawn she repainted them. On the third morning the copper dome had shifted overnight. There was a fresh orange smear on the cobbles, a trail of it running from the square right up to the bakery's back step. Tobi swore it had rolled over to borrow flour.
Mags finished the dome low on the wall, half hidden under a splash of teal, and let one last drip run down to the doorway. When Esther came out she stopped in the road and looked for a long time. Then she went back inside and returned with a warm loaf, which she set on the sill beneath the paint, as if somebody had been walking very carefully on the stones and deserved their supper.
