Watercolour cat face on a calf

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A grey cat face with bright green eyes sits at the centre of the design, with thin black linework for the whiskers and a paw outline below. Loose watercolour washes in blue, purple, red and yellow fill the background, with black dots scattered across the top left. The colour and wash effects dominate the composition, and the tattoo sits on a bare lower leg against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Paint had gone into the bilge water again, and Maggie Reid was on her knees scrubbing a stain of cobalt off the galley deck when the cat came down the ladder with his tail up like a question. Mackerel, the skipper called him, though nobody on the Ellen Rae could say why. He had one eye green as bottle glass and the other half hidden behind a grey smudge of fur, and he watched her work the way a pilot watches weather.

The paints were the cook's doing. Donal had bought a tin of watercolour cakes in Peterhead for his daughter's birthday and never sent them, and they had rolled about the locker since March, cracking open whenever the boat leaned. Every time the hull groaned, a fresh wash of colour slid across the floor. Maggie had given up on keeping it clean. She let the blue and violet run into the scuppers and watched the cat stalk the shimmering edges, batting at a red bead that rolled toward the stove.

On the fourth night of the storm, Donal was thrown against the bulkhead and the cat was the only one who saw the wave coming. He yowled from the top of the shelf, and Maggie, still gripping the handrail, looked up to see the spilled tin of yellow sliding straight at her boots. She stepped aside. The wall of water took the galley door off its hinges and left the paint smeared across the far wall in a bright curve, like the path of a thrown thing.

Afterwards the cat sat on the sill of the wheelhouse, washing one paw, and the skipper said he had never seen a cat so pleased with himself. Maggie painted a paw print on the cabin wall that week, pressed her own hand to it, and left the blues running where they wanted to go.
