Watercolour fox on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A fox in mid-stride is shown in orange, red and yellow tones, with loose brush-like edges and paint-style drips running down below it. Blue and purple splashes surround the figure, and the fox is rendered with soft shading rather than solid outlines. The tattoo fills most of the frame on the outer thigh, with a person's hand holding up a blue fabric at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down the hill the week the river turned to paint, and nobody in Harrow Bridge believed the rumours until Mrs Abernethy's washing line dripped orange onto the lane. Her husband swore it was rust. Her son swore it was the fox, which had been seen trotting through the allotments with a mouthful of cadmium-red wool and a look of enormous satisfaction.

The dyeworks had closed in the spring. Its owner, a quiet man called Tobias Ferrier, had left his vats full and his brushes soaking in turpentine, and the rain had got into everything. By June the brook ran blue on Tuesdays and violet on Fridays, and the fox moved through the colours as if it had been born in them, leaving soft smudges on the stile and wet spatters across the church step.

On the last evening of the month the children followed it to the dyeworks yard. The fox stopped beneath the broken skylight, lifted one forefoot as though to step onto the air, and let the sunset pour down over it. Where the light touched its flank, the orange ran in long drips to the cobbles and pooled there, bright as a struck match. When the children looked again the fox was gone, but the cobbles were streaked from the gate to the brook in strokes so fast and loose that anyone could see a creature had run straight through the colour and kept going.
