Watercolour French bulldog on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A French bulldog silhouette sits on the top of a foot, with the head and ears in teal and the body shifting from orange to pink. A small red heart sits near the chest. The soft, bleeding edges and gradient colour fills create a painterly watercolour effect against the pale skin.

The river had taken the last of the good ochre by the time the bargeman put you ashore at Ostrel, so you had three pans of colour left and a bulldog who would not stop following you. Each morning he sat beside your wet board while you worked, watching the water bloom outward through the pigment the way ink feathers in milk.

The Lady of the Salt Quay wanted his shadow painted on the wall of her counting house, something she could show to visiting merchants. You had only ultramarine left, so you cut it with river water until it went the colour of a shallow sea, and you let that teal pool in his head and ears. The body you gave to the last of the sunset, orange at the shoulders, running rose-pink down the legs, the edges left to bleed where the brush had been too wet to be careful. Fen supervised the whole business from a sack of barley.

When she came to inspect the work she frowned at the shape and said the chest looked empty. You took up the carmine, the very last of it, and touched a single drop where a heart would sit. It spread at once into a soft red blot, blurred at the rim as if it had been breathing. She stood a long time looking at it. Then she said you could keep the wall, and paid you in copper, and asked whether the dog would come back in spring to be painted again.
