Watercolour mountain range on the ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A wide mountain range runs horizontally across the side of the torso, with jagged peaks outlined in dark grey-blue. The fills are soft, washed and layered, with pale blue and lilac highlights and darker blue shading on the right-hand peak. The composition is set against plain skin and a black and white checked background.

Her husband Edwin went out on the Brightwater in the spring of the bad gale and did not come back. The fleet searched the grey channel for three days. On the fourth, Maud climbed the cliff path with a lantern and a tin of tar and painted a white line along the rock where the highest peak met the sky, so that any boat in the murk could see the shape of home. Her neighbours laughed, then stopped laughing, then began to bring their own tins.

By the next autumn the whole cliff was striped with white, and the fishermen said the mountains had grown a collar. Nobody could agree which of the peaks was the true one. Maud said it was the blue one on the right, the one that took the most colour when the light went, and she would not hear otherwise.

Edwin came home in the second week of October, thinner and cross, having sheltered on a skerry with a bottle of rum and a sheep. He stood on the wall and looked at the range for a long while. "You've made it too tidy," he said. Maud handed him the tar.
