Watercolour red flower on the lower leg

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A small flower sits on the outer lower leg, with soft red and pink petals and a dark green stem curving downward. The petals use loose, blended washes with no hard outlines, giving a painted watercolour look. The flower is set against plain skin, with rolled denim and white sneakers visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had got into my sketchbook again, so every poppy I drew that week bled into its neighbour. Master Hale said that was the only honest thing about them. We were lodged in the gatehouse of Ravenscar Keep, which the mill folk still call the Wet Castle because its moat has never quite drained. He paid for my board by restoring the chapel frescoes, and I paid him back by grinding his pigments and keeping quiet when he cursed.

The picture I liked best was in the old solar, a woman's face half lost under lichen, and beside it a single flower someone had painted with wash rather than line. Red faded to rose at the edges, and a green stem ran down the plaster toward the floorboards. Nobody knew the painter. Hale said a mason had done it while waiting for his wages. I thought it was a girl who had no other way to be heard, but I kept that to myself.

On the last evening the damp came up through the boards and the lamp guttered. I mixed the vermilion with far too much water, the way I had been told never to, and let it run across the paper. Hale climbed the stairs, looked over my shoulder, and for once said nothing at all. In the morning he packed his brushes and left me the ledger.

I stayed. Each spring the rain comes in sideways through the arrow slit and runs the colour down the stone, carrying it into the cracks where nobody thinks to look. I go up with a fresh brush and put it back, though the castle has never once asked me to.
