Fine line rose on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single rose with an open bloom, a curling stem and two pointed leaves is drawn in thin black linework on the outer ankle. The lines are clean and the shading is minimal, with light grey tones only inside the petals. The design sits centrally on the leg against a plain grey floor, with the wearer's trainers and trouser hem framing the lower part of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The king had locked the rose garden three winters ago, and the iron key had hung on my belt ever since, because I was the only gardener left who could still coax a bloom from the north wall. Nobody asked why the roses were forbidden. Nobody needed to. Everyone in Merrow had heard the old tale about the queen who died of a thorn prick, and most had decided it was safer to let the hedges grow wild.

On the morning the first pale bud split open, I did what I had sworn not to do. I cut the stem where it curled round the trellis, leaving two leaves on it the way my mother taught me, and I carried it down through the lower gate into the market. The rose was open only halfway, its outer petals still tight, and the stem had a small hook at the tip where it had grown around a nail.

A tinsmith's boy saw it first and whistled. Then a carter's wife offered a loaf for it, and an old soldier offered his boots. I refused them all until the chamberlain himself came down the cobbled hill in his grey cloak, breathing hard, and asked me plainly where I had found it. I told him the truth, that the wall had decided for itself to flower. He looked at the bloom for a long time without speaking.

He paid me nothing. He took the stem, turned it gently in his fingers, and said the king would want to see it at breakfast. When I walked back up the hill I found the garden gate standing open, the key still warm in my hand, and the trellis bare except for a single leaf that had fallen in the dust. I picked it up and pressed it between the pages of my ledger, where it stays.
