Watercolour style cat on the wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small cat sitting with its tail curled round at the base is outlined in dark ink on the inside of a wrist. The body is filled with soft pink, orange and teal washes, with scattered purple and teal splashes around it. The linework is fairly loose and the colour bleeds past the outline, giving a painted, watercolour finish against plain pale skin.

Sit closer, child, and mind the cat on the step. Every tale from the kingdom of Ammerlow has a cat in it somewhere, usually asleep on something she should not be sleeping on. This one belongs to Sorrel Tanner, who painted the river gates the colour of sunrise, and to the grey cat who walked across her palette on the morning of the Midsummer Fair.

The king had commissioned his own portrait for the great hall and wanted it finished by noon. Sorrel had three pots of paint open, a brush behind each ear and no patience left in her. The cat, whom the town called Bramble because nobody had ever lifted her cleanly, stepped into the rose pink, then the marigold, then the teal, and climbed the easel with four wet paws. The king would have looked splendid, had he not been dripping with colour like a fruit tart.
Sorrel shouted. Bramble sat down on the drop cloth, curled her tail round her feet and looked up at her as though Sorrel were the one who had made the mess. Sorrel meant to scrub the boards. Instead she sat down beside the cat and watched the paint soak into the linen, pink running past the lines she had drawn, teal flicking out in small bright spots where the paws had shaken free. When the bell rang for noon, she left the portrait unfinished and let it dry as it was.
The king came, looked at the wet splashes and the cat sitting in the middle of them, and was furious for almost a whole minute. Then he asked Sorrel to paint Bramble instead, and the picture now hangs above the river gate, where you can still see the teal drops scattered round her, and the cat waiting exactly where she sat, as if somebody might yet call her name.
