Simple cat outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a sitting cat in profile, facing left, with pointed ears, a stylised whisker line and a tail that curls into a spiral at the base. It is drawn in a single black line of even weight with no shading, and the thin lines suggest fine line work. The ink sits on a plain skin background, with a green surface at the left edge and a purple surface at the right edge, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and keep your feet off the good rug, because the cat is sitting exactly where she always sits, on the lychgate post, and nobody in Dunmore has ever managed to move her. Her name was Nell. She belonged to nobody, which is the only sort of cat worth having at a wedding, and she had opinions about the ceremony long before the vicar did.

On the morning of Agnes Pell's wedding the ring was missing from the vestry box. Tomas, the groom, went white as a candle and searched every pew with his hat in his hands, while Agnes's mother told the whole churchyard that she had always known the Pells couldn't be trusted with gold. Nell watched from the lychgate, her tail curled round her paws in a perfect spiral, and she did not blink once.

When the bells began, Tomas looked up and there it was, hung on the end of that curling tail like a little brass moon. Nell had carried it out of the vestry in her mouth, one careful step after another, and she had sat down to wait for someone worth giving it to. Tomas offered her a herring from his coat pocket, which he had brought for luck. She took the herring, and she let the ring go, and not one person in that churchyard has ever disputed the trade.

So that is why, every wedding in Dunmore since, somebody sets a saucer of cream on the lychgate step before the first hymn. Nobody has ever seen Nell eat it. But the cream is always gone by the time the bride walks out, and the tail is always curled just so.
