Black cat reaching for a butterfly on a wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a cat stands on its hind legs, one paw raised towards a small butterfly with teal and blue wings. The cat is filled with flat black ink with no visible shading, and its tail curls upwards behind it. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a plain, softly blurred indoor background.

Nobody on Bream Quay expected the cat to catch anything, least of all the butterfly. Soot had spent three summers on the fish market step watching the gulls with the patience of a rent collector, and in all that time she had never once got up on her hind legs for anything that wasn't a herring head. The fishmonger swore she was half ghost and half drainpipe. Eilidh, who mended nets on the slip beside the market, thought she was simply lazy and had decided that lazy was a kind of wisdom.

The butterfly came in on the morning breeze off the Marguerite, which had docked at dawn with a hold full of lemons from Cadiz. It was a small thing, the colour of sea glass held up to a lamp, and it spent a long while tilting over the crates as though it had lost a ticket. Eilidh watched it drift past the nets and over the wall, and then she heard the scrape of claws on stone and saw Soot rise up slowly, tail curling behind her like a question mark, one paw lifted towards the blue wing.

For a moment the whole quay seemed to hold its breath with her. The gulls stopped squabbling. The bell on the buoy went quiet. Then the breeze shifted and the butterfly lifted clean over the cat's head and sailed out past the lighthouse towards the open water, where the light caught it once more and then let it go.

Soot dropped back onto the step, licked one paw with great dignity, and stared at the empty air as if the sea had cheated her out of a wager. Eilidh went back to her needle and her knots. She thought it was the best thing she had seen all week: a creature that had reached for something beautiful, and had found that reaching was the part it could keep.
