Whale and hearts on an upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A small whale in a speckled dark teal fill swims to the left, with a tail fin at the right. Tiny pink, red and dark hearts drift upwards from its spout, creating a playful scatter across the upper arm. The image is a close, softly lit crop of skin with a blurred pink and white background.

The whale came into Porthellow Bay the spring the herring failed, and nobody in the village knew what to make of her. She was small for a whale, no longer than a fishing smack, and her skin was the dark speckled blue of the harbour wall after rain. Old Mabry Tregear, who mended nets on the slip, said she was looking for someone, and the children laughed at him until the day she came in close enough to the steps that they could see her eye.

She swam up and down the bay all summer, and wherever she went she blew small hearts out of her spout, pink and red and a few dark ones that sank slowly. The fishwives gathered them in their aprons and said it was bad luck to touch them. Eda Pollard, who kept the shop by the chapel, swept them off her step every morning and every morning found more. Her son had gone to the far sea on a steamer the autumn before and not written since.
In August Eda walked out along the breakwater at dusk and sat with her feet over the edge. The whale came and lay beneath her, close enough to touch, and Eda said nothing, only watched the hearts rise and drift over the water like sparks from a bonfire. When the last light went, the whale turned her tail toward the open sea and was gone by morning. Eda swept her step as usual, and found there was nothing on it but salt, and she went inside and put the kettle on for two.
